Spiders
are all predators, but have many different lifestyles. Some make webs and wait for prey to come to them while others are active hunters. Spiders are important predators in the landscape and are very common in trees, shrubs, grass, and herbaceous plant beds. Most spiders are general predators, feeding on a wide variety of prey. Their are a number of spider species that may be found in the landscape. All have two body parts, an abdomen and a cephalothorax (combined head and thorax), and eight legs. Spiders tend to avoid people and most are harmless to humans. Spider complexes are believed to be important in reducing several kinds of landscape pests.
