Demonstration Gardens

Autrey Mill

The Summerour house is an 1860s farmhouse moved to the Autrey Mill property to preserve it from encroaching development. Ornamental plants are selected for the garden based on historic context as well as contemporary design and interest.

Fernwood Forest at Archibald Smith Plantation 

935 Alpharetta St, Roswell, GA 30075

The Fernwood Forest at Archibald Smith Plantation is a demonstration garden focused on restoration and maintenance of two acres of native woodland. Volunteer activities include exotic species removal, planting native species, weeding, watering, and tending to existing plantings, cleaning and upgrading of stream banks, restoration of stream bridges, leading external volunteer groups, and leading classes and workshops.

GROWL Garden

The GROWL Garden, built as part of Georgia 4-H’s Project GROWL (Growing Real Opportunities in Work and Life), is both a community garden and MGEV demonstration garden. The GROWL Garden is used in educational activities focused on vegetable, herb, and flower gardening in raised beds, composting, and more. MGEVs help maintain areas of the garden, lead classes and workshops, and assist with events as part of this project. Note: much of the garden is maintained by community gardeners, and produce should not be harvested without permission from the plot holder.

Island Ford Native Pollinator Garden 

8850 Roberts Drive Sandy Springs, GA 30350

The Island Ford Native Pollinator Garden is located at the front entrance of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area Island Ford Park in Sandy Springs. The garden, maintained in collaboration with the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and the Chattahoochee National Park Conservancy, features all native plants. Many of these native plants support our pollinators, either with floral resources or as host plants for insect larvae.

Lost Corner 

7300 Brandon Mill Road Sandy Springs, GA 30328

The “S-Bed” at Lost Corner Preserve in Sandy Springs is a demonstration garden with an emphasis on cottage garden plantings, featuring full sun, part shade, and full shade ornamentals. Volunteers maintain the S-Bed in collaboration with the Friends of Lost Corner organization. Great Southeast Pollinator Census counting events and other classes and workshops will be offered at Lost Corner Preserve.

Native Plant Garden at the Teaching Museum North 

793 Mimosa Boulevard Roswell, GA 30075

This garden, adjacent to the Teaching Museum North Greenhouse, demonstrates how native plants can be used as beautiful and functional replacements for non-native ornamentals in our landscapes. Now in its third year, the Teaching Museum Greenhouse Native Plant Garden features 45 varieties of perennial native plants.
