UGA Extension Journeyman Farmer Certificate Program

UGA Extension Henry County will be hosting the Journeyman Farmer Certificate Program, which is for those interested in starting a farm business or those who have recently begun farming and want to improve their operation. USDA defines a beginning farmer as anyone who has been farming for less than ten years continuously. It consists of two parts: the Small Farm Business Planning and the Fruit and Vegetable production Section. The Small Farm Business Planning Section will be held on Friday, August 23, 2024, 9:00am – 4:00pm in collaboration with the UGA Small Business Development Center and will cover topics such as budgets, and financing, income statements, risk management, marketing and technology, as well as preparing a business plan. Successful participants will have the foundation to prepare their own farm business plan.  The program will be held at the UGA Extension Henry County Office located at 97 Lake Dow Road, McDonough, GA 30252. The second part is the Small Fruit and Vegetable Production Section that covers a multitude of subjects relating to crop production. It covers topics such as soil health and fertility, cover crops, pest control, food safety, and marketing. Participants will have the chance to visit a working farm as part of the program.  It will be held on Thursday September 26, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Friday, September 27, 9:00am to 4:00 pm, and Saturday, September 28, 2024, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The presentations are given by UGA specialists with accompanying textbook and other materials. The program will be held at the UGA Extension Henry County Office located at 97 Lake Dow Road, McDonough, GA 30252. The cost is $100.00 per participant.
