Volunteer of the Month

Hallie Dixon – Coweta 4-H Volunteer of the Month

Coweta County 4-H is proud to recognize Hallie Dixon as our Volunteer of the Month. As the “Chicks in Chaps” Mounted Drill Team coach, Hallie plays a vital role in helping youth build confidence, horsemanship skills, and a strong sense of teamwork. Her dedication creates meaningful experiences where young people grow both in and out of the saddle.

Hallie shares:

“The thing I enjoy most about working with Coweta 4-H is having the opportunity to help young equestrians build their skills and confidence in and out of the saddle. Through my volunteer work with 4-H, I have had the beautiful experience of watching young people develop in partnership with their horses, discover the gratification of working hard to accomplish goals, and learn the value of being a good team member.

“The one thing I wish people knew about volunteering with Coweta 4-H is how the structure, support, and guidance of our 4-H office genuinely helps volunteers learn to be better leaders in service to the kids and their families.”

Coweta Master Gardener’s 2026 Spring Garden Tour

Date: Saturday, May 9, 2026
Time: 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Visit five beautiful gardens in Coweta County, Georgia.

Tour Locations

1. Dunaway Gardens

Dunaway Gardens is a historic 22-acre site developed over a century ago as both a public rock garden and a training space for theatrical productions. Early visitors included Roy and Walt Disney, Tallulah Bankhead, and Minnie Pearl.

The gardens feature flowering plants, native species, and botanical collections from around the world. Visitors can explore walking paths, pools, and bridges throughout the property. A 700-seat rock amphitheater serves as a centerpiece and has hosted performances and events, including weddings.

Today, the gardens are being restored while adding new features for future generations.

Safety Note:
Some stairways may be difficult for elderly guests. Use caution on stairs, avoid distractions, wear non-slip footwear, and keep one hand free when carrying items.

2. Best Garden

The Best Garden is located on a residential lot with a natural woodland setting that includes five species of oak trees.

This garden demonstrates how thoughtful design can create distinct outdoor spaces inspired by British garden traditions. Features include:

  • Ornamental grasses in the front yard

  • A 300-foot dry creek bed

  • A formal parterre and sunken rose garden

  • Woodland garden areas

  • Plantings such as azaleas, camellias, hydrangeas, and other shade-loving plants

  • An English-style garden folly

3. Jones Family Garden

This garden surrounds a Colonial home built in 1910. Originally shaded by large oak and pecan trees, the property featured winding paths and a woodland landscape.

In 2021, an EF-4 tornado destroyed many of the mature trees and plants. The garden transitioned from shade to full sun conditions.

Since then, new growth has flourished, including:

  • Peonies, salvia, and roses

  • Mock orange and angel’s trumpet

  • Irises, berry bushes, and magnolias

  • Native plants shared by friends and family

The result is a vibrant, renewed garden full of color and life.

4. Inspiration Garden

The Inspiration Garden is designed to educate and encourage good gardening practices. It is maintained by Master Gardener Extension volunteers.

Visitors can learn about:

  • Plant selection and care

  • Native and pollinator plants

  • Flowers, vegetables, and herbs suited to the local area

  • Low-maintenance gardening techniques

The garden also provides a peaceful space to relax and enjoy nature.

5. James E. McGuffey Nature Center and Trails

This nature center offers six trails, including a paved path for easy access.

Visitors can:

  • Walk or stroll through natural areas

  • Observe birds and wildlife

  • Read educational signage

  • Enjoy fresh air and outdoor learning

It is a space designed for exploration, connection, and relaxation.
