Food Preservation
UGA Extension programs and services in home food preservation are varied and teach science-based methods for long-term storing of food at home. Our goal is to inform people how to preserve high quality foods with tested, safe methods. We offer classes in some locations around the state, as well as free and for-sale publications.
Purchase the So Easy to Preserve book through the county office or order online here.
Chapters include: Preserving Food, Canning, Pickled Products, Sweet Spreads and Syrups, Freezing, and Drying. You can also find recipes and tips in addition to a list of most frequently asked questions, a table of problems, causes and ways to prevent the problem from happening again.
Visit the National Center for Home Food Preservation website for the most current research based recommendations for home food preservation.
Pressure Gauge Testing
Did you know that your pressure canner gauge should be tested annually?
If your dial gauge is not accurate, it is not correctly reading pressure which may result in under or over processing and unsafe food.
Luckily we can check your gauge for you. Call the office to set up your appointment!
Consults are free of charge. You will need to bring your lid & pressure gauge with you. The FACS Agent will test your gauge and give you a diagnosis & recommendations, but we are not able to recalibrate or provide you with a new gauge if readings are inaccurate.
