Summary
The agent increased the number of scholarships awarded to Junior Swine Exhibitors from one to ten.
Situation
Youth in Georgia are awarded scholarships for athletics and academics, as well as through various programs that support exhibitors of animal species like horses and cattle. States like Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Texas and Oklahoma offer their junior swine exhibitor's the opportunity to earn scholarships. However, as of February 2006, only one scholarship was available to Georgia Junior Swine Exhibitors.
Response
After several discussions between the county agent and an individual concerned about the Georgia Junior Swine Program, a meeting was scheduled. County agents, swine producers, Agri-businessmen and Vo-Ag teachers were invited to formulate a plan that would bring recognition and incentives to our Georgia Junior Swine Exhibitors. After several meetings and a lot of discussion, the Georgia Junior Swine Boosters (GJSB) organization was established.
Impact
At the State 4-H/FFA market hog show in February 2006, an announcement was made that the Georgia Junior Swine Boosters was formed. The GJSB had a mission statement, purpose, bylaws, a set of officers, and a board of directors. The county agent announced that $5,000 had already been secured for ten $500 scholarships to be given away to 12th grade exhibitors at the 2007 state show. In addition $3,400 is being raised to purchase 6 animals at the 2007 show. Within 36 hours of making the announcement of the new GJSB nonprofit organization, 85 junior exhibitors, adults and families had paid membership dues to join and further support the effort of the group.
