Story in Brief

Youth in Georgia are awarded scholarships for athletics and academics, as well as through various programs that support exhibitors of animal species like horses and cattle. However, as of February 2006, only one scholarship was available to Georgia Junior swine exhibitors. County Extension agents, swine producers, agri-businessmen and Vo-Ag teachers were invited to formulate a plan that would bring recognition and incentives to Georgia Junior swine exhibitors. After several meetings, the Georgia Junior Swine Boosters organization was established. The GJSB has a mission statement, purpose, bylaws, a set of officers and a board of directors. About $5,000 had already been secured for ten $500 scholarships to be given away to 12th grade exhibitors at the 2007 state show. In addition, $3,400 is being raised to purchase six animals at the 2007 show. Within 36 hours of making the announcement of the new GJSB nonprofit organization, 85 junior exhibitors, adults and families had paid membership dues to join and further support the effort of the group.
