Summary

A web based program with a user friendly interface was developed for County agents, consultants, soil test clients, and others to modify information from soil test reports to meet a client's specific needs. With it, the user can calculate the weight of fertilizer materials to supply the N, P2O5, K2O recommended by a soil test report.

Situation

Soil test reports provide recommendations for fertilizer nutrients to be applied to the soil for optimum plant growth. The recommendations on soil test reports sometimes require adjustments because recommended fertilizer grades are not available in local stores, the size of area to be fertilized is different than recommended, or the units for the land area to be fertilized are different than in the soil test report. The need for adjustments are most frequently encountered by homeowners who need assistance in making the needed adjustments.

Response

A web based program with a user friendly interface was developed for County agents, consultants, soil test clients, and others to modify information from soil test reports to meet a client's specific needs. With it, the user can calculate the weight of fertilizer materials to supply the N, P2O5, K2O recommended by a soil test report. Users have the option to select recommendations in pounds per acre that are typical of agronomic crop recommendations or pounds per 1000 square feet that are typical of homeowners reports such as for a home lawn. The calculator allows the user to select fertilizer grades different from those given in the recommendation, because fertilizer grades recommended are sometimes not available locally. The calculator also has a section that allows the user to calculate the area of a garden or lawn given the dimensions and shape of the area to be fertilized. Fertilizer costs can also be calculated. The calculator is available at http://aesl.ces.uga.edu/soil/fertcalc/.

Impact

The calculator has been used by people in 38 states, plus Canada and Brazil to do calculations to modify or adjust fertilizer recommendations. The calculator is also listed as the third Useful Link at http://homegrownfruit.blogspot.com/, and Walter Reeves lists it in several places on his Georgia Gardener website at http://www.walterreeves.com/.
