Story in Brief

Soil test reports provide recommendations for fertilizer nutrients to be applied to the soil for optimum plant growth. But the recommendations on soil test reports sometimes require adjustments. The UGA Agricultural and Environmental Services Lab developed a web-based program with a user friendly interface for Cooperative Extension agents, consultants, soil test clients and others to modify information from soil test reports to meet a client's specific needs. Users have the option to select recommendations in pounds per acre that are typical of agronomic crop recommendations or pounds per 1000 square feet that are typical of homeowners reports such as for a home lawn. The calculator allows the user to select fertilizer grades different from those given in the recommendation, because fertilizer grades recommended are sometimes not available locally. The calculator also has a section that allows the user to calculate the area of a garden or lawn given the dimensions and shape of the area to be fertilized. Fertilizer costs can also be calculated. The calculator has been used by people in 38 states, plus Canada and Brazil to do calculations to modify or adjust fertilizer recommendations.
