Summary
Mitchell County agents initiated on-farm demonstration trials to document the effectiveness of a new peanut variety with nematode resistance. Results indicate this variety will perform well and save substantially on costs for nematode control.
Situation
Over 65% of peanut growers in Mitchell County use preventative treatments for nematode control. This amounts to over 16,000 acres treated. Costs per acre for treatments range from $35 per acre up to $105 per acre. Potentially, $560,000 to $1,680,000 may be spent each year on peanut nematode control .
A new peanut variety (Tiftguard) was developed with nematode resistance. 2008 was the first year seed were available to many growers in Mitchell County. Tiftguard had preformed well in small plots and in limited field studies. Some growers didn't feel comfortable planting the variety with no nematode control treatments in light of limited field data.
Response
A trial was initiated by Mitchell County Extension agents with cooperation from Extension specialists and a local grower to evaluate performance of Tiftguard in a Mitchell County field. Low and medium rates of nematicides were compared. Plots were approximately 0.75 acres in size, replicated four times and machine harvested.
Impact
Tiftguard performed well with no significant yield differences comparing the low and medium nematicide rates.
This study helps growers gain confidence in planting the Tiftguard variety with the potential of reducing additional nematode control inputs. Growers have a potential savings of up to $105.00 per acre.
