Our Impact
There are more economic losses to frost damage than to any other weather-related phenomenon. Information about dates of last frost events in the spring can assist farmers in their decision when to plant their crop. UGA biological and agricultural scientists compiled a list of first and last frost dates using data from the Georgia Automated Environmental Monitoring Network weather stations. A UGA Cooperative Extension publication is available online. They also added a frost date calculator on the Georgia AEMN web site. Additional features on the web site such as temperature prediction can be used to help decide when to turn on irrigation sprinklers for frost protection of small fruits, especially blueberries and strawberries. Growers and homeowners will be able to use the information on frost dates to help decide on appropriate management practices and frost protection measures.
