Mar 28 Garden to Jar: An Introduction to Home Gardening and Food Preservation Dalton, GA - (85.0 miles) "Garden to Jar" is an educational program designed to help participants understand how to grow their own food and safely preserve it for year-round use. This class blends home gardening fundamentals with evidence-based food preservation practices to support healthy, sustainable food habits. Participants will learn basic gardening concepts and essential food preservation principles. This collaborative program is presented by the University of Georgia Extension Family & Consumer Sciences Agent and the Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent, ensuring participants receive research-based information on gardening and food safety. "Garden to Jar" is ideal for beginning gardeners, home food preservationists, and anyone interested in connecting the garden to safe, practical food preservation at home. The cost of the class is $5. Each participant must register separately.

Mar 30 Vegetable and Small Fruit Production Training - Journeyman Farmer Certificate Program Part 2 Cumming, GA - (52.0 miles) Farming is a business. The Vegetable and Small Fruit Production Training course, Part 2 of the UGA Journeyman Farmer Certificate Program, is designed to help new and beginning farmers achieve profitability and business sustainability. The 8-week Forsyth County Extension course includes two new sessions: Cut Flower Production and Controlled Environment Agriculture. Other sessions cover: Soil Health and Fertility, Fertilizers and Amendments, Cover Crops, Crop Rotation, Pest Management, Seasonality and Crop Selection, Vegetable Propagation, Considerations for Small Fruit Production, Small Farm Safety, Post-Harvest Handling and Food Safety, Crop Plans, and Marketing. Classes are held from 7-9:30 p.m. on Monday evenings. A tour of local farms will be scheduled for one Saturday during the course (TBD). Your $75 registration fee includes a course manual, program materials, and light snacks.
