Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Program

2027 Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Program

The Georgia Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Program offers many opportunities to enhance your horticultural expertise and make new gardening friends as you become involved in community projects. This program involves horticultural service training that requires a minimum of 50 volunteer hours to earn certification during the first year and 25 volunteer hours every year thereafter, along with 10 hours of continuing education to stay in good standing. 

Program information:

  • When Are Classes?: Classes will be held between January 6th and March 24, 2027 on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; and a workshop Friday, February 19, 2027, from 9:30-12:30pm.
  • Deadline: The application deadline is Wednesday, September 30, 2026.  
  • How Many Are Accepted?: Enrollment for the 2027 Gwinnett County Master Gardener Extension Volunteer program is limited.
  • Are There Tests?: As part of your training, you will be required to pass a mid-term and a final examination. Study sessions are provided.
  • Location: Classes will be held January 6th through February 19th at Gwinnett Technical College, 5150 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville, GA 30043; and the Dekalb Extension Office from February 24 to March 24th at 4380 Memorial Dr. Ste 200, Decatur, GA 30032.
  • Cost: There is a one-time program fee is $200.00, which covers the expenses of the Georgia Master Gardener handbook, classes, lectures, name tags, supplies, and a ‘Certificate of Completion’ (upon completed volunteer hours).
  • Meet & Greet Info Session: Attendance is not required, but if you have questions about the program, please plan to attend our MGEV applicants’ informational meet and greet session on Friday, September 25, 2026 from 2pm to 4pm at 750 South Perry Street, Lawrenceville, GA 30046 (2nd Floor Wellness Center Multipurpose room) where you will learn about the master gardener program, projects, speak to actual master gardeners and enjoy light refreshments.  Please RSVP to Lisa Klein by email at lisa.klein@gwinnettcounty.com, or 678-377-4010. You may bring your completed application to this session.      
  • When Will I Know?: Applicants will be notified via email by October 16, 2026 if they have been accepted into the 2027 Georgia Master Gardener Extension Volunteer Program.
  • When Do I Pay?: The $200 program fee, all forms and information for a background screening/motor vehicle record check are due upon acceptance into the program.
