Livestock Programs

The Georgia 4-H Livestock Program offers extraordinary educational opportunities for youth ages 9 to 18. 4-Her's involved in the livestock program are challenged with real-life issues as they learn responsibility through raising, showing and judging livestock. Livestock projects give students the opportunity to practice and acquire new knowledge in the fields of animal science, business, time management and leadership. Charlton County 4-H livestock programs include horse, beef, swine and goat projects.

Beef Cattle

file

Showing beef cattle takes time and dedication to feed and grow a mature, high quality breeding or meat project. Students in grades 4-12th are eligible to show beef cattle. Students can show steers or heifers in 4-H. The student is responsible for purchasing their project. The 4-H office can give you resources and contact information for quality Georgia beef breeders for you to purchase your show project from. Beef projects are purchased in the early spring and grown until the shows begin in the fall. There are several state and local shows students are encouraged to participate in throughout the show season to get the most out of their time and dedication they put into their projects.

For more information on showing beef cattle, contact the Extension office.

Goat shows begin in Late August and run through November. 4-H'ers purchase their show goats May- July.  For more information on showing goats please contact our office.
