Chick Chain
Chick Chain
Chick Chain gives 4-H’ers the opportunity to raise their own chickens! Participating 4-H’ers will receive 12 Rhode Island Red female chicks in the spring to raise. In the fall, 4-H’ers have the option to show, auction, & dress up their chickens for a costume contest for the chance to win cash prizes and trophies. All auction funds will go directly back to the 4-H’er who raised the chickens.
Timeline:
Feb. 8 - Deadline to Register
TBD - Workshop: Raising Chickens 101
April - Chicks Arrive
October - Chick Chain Show & Auction
Rules:
1. Students in grades 1-12 order chicks through the Hall County 4-H Office. Application form must be submitted by February 8, 2024. The chicks should arrive in April.
2. Members must have the necessary facilities, equipment, and supplies to complete the project. Support and assistance from a parent or guardian is required.
3. 4-H members that have never participated in the Chick Chain Project must attend the Chick Chain Workshop on a date to be determined (TBD). If a member cannot attend this meeting because of circumstances beyond their control, the member can still receive his/her chicks by calling the Extension Office and learning about poultry care and management.
4. Each 4-H'er participating in the project will be notified of the exact arrival date for the chicks. Members are to come and pick up their chicks on that date at the 4-H Office. Those that do not pick up their chicks on that date will forfeit the chance to participate in the Chick Chain Project.
5. Those 4-Hers who have previously ordered chicks and failed to pick them up will not be considered for this project in the future.
6. The 4-H member will take the chicks home and raise them until they are mature and laying eggs.
7. An invitation to the 4-H Chick Chain Show and Sale (October) will be sent to each participating 4-H'er and they must bring their 4 best chickens to the show. There will be an auction immediately following the conclusion of the show where the 4-H'ers can auction some of their chickens, if they wish. 4-H'ers get to keep all of the proceeds from the auction.
8. Additional awards will be given for students who enter a chicken into the Chick Chain Costume Contest at the Show and Sale.
9. No chicks other than those to be part of the 4-H Chick Chain will be ordered by Hall County 4-H/UGA Extension.
