UGA Extension has provided online educational programming, consultations and essential lab services during the COVID-19 pandemic while observing safe health practices for employees and the public. We offer resources for adults and 4-H youth on health, food, finances, parenting, agriculture and more. The Gilmer County UGA Extension office is open and receiving clients and visitors in the foyer area. Clients and visitors are encouraged to wear a mask. Social distancing is practiced. Testing and test kits are available for soil, water, radon, litter, etc. from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon (closed for lunch) then 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm Monday thru Friday (except holidays) at 1123 Progress Road in Ellijay, Georgia. The Gilmer County office email is uge1123@uga.edu for general inquiries. Gilmer County is located in the North Central portion of Georgia at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about an hour north of Atlanta, and is known as the "Apple Capital of Georgia," holding an annual Apple Festival in Ellijay in October. In addition to an ANR Agent, 4-H Agent, FACS Agent and Administrative Assistant, we have a SNAP-Ed Program Assistant, 4-H AmeriCorps Member plus Master Gardener Extension Volunteers (MGEVs.) We offer gauge testing for canners, by appointment, and information on the local cannery, Ellijay Farmers Market in late spring/summer/early fall, and November Christmas market. We also offer assistance with pesticide licenses, GATE cards, radon testing in the air, radon testing in well water, and a variety of other tests including soil and water. There are 4-H school club meetings, summer camp, team sports and competitions, plus educational activities, classes and workshops in all three program areas.
