Stephens County Extension offers educational programs in the areas of horticulture and agriculture, leadership and citizenship for youth through Stephens County 4-H, and food safety and nutrition information.
UGA Extension operates through a unique partnership with Stephens County, the University of Georgia, the State of Georgia and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Backed up by specialists and a network of resources, Extension Agents have been bringing research-based information to counties in Georgia since 1914.

Our mission is to extend lifelong learning to Georgia citizens through unbiased, research-based education in agriculture, the environment, communities, youth, and families.

Mar 13 Equine Short Course Equine Short Course on March 13, 2026, from 8-3 pm at 427 East Atlanta Hwy, Rutledge, GA 30663. We will be discussing topics on equine nutrition, saddle fitting (western & English), weed ID, trailer safety & maintenance, and equine first aid. Lunch will be provided, but we ask that you bring a lawn chair for seating. This event is rain or shine. Attendees will receive 1 hour of pesticide credit. We want to thank Ag South, Town-n-County Farm& Pet Supply, Upper Ocumulgee Soil and Water Conservation District, Jasper County Farm Bureau, and Lawry's Feed & Farm Supply for sponsoring this event.

Mar 16 Vegetable and Small Fruit Production Training - Journeyman Farmer Certificate Program Part 2 Farming is a business. The Vegetable and Small Fruit Production Training course, Part 2 of the UGA Journeyman Farmer Certificate Program, is designed to help new and beginning farmers achieve profitability and business sustainability. The 8-week Forsyth County Extension course includes two new sessions: Cut Flower Production and Controlled Environment Agriculture. Other sessions cover: Soil Health and Fertility, Fertilizers and Amendments, Cover Crops, Crop Rotation, Pest Management, Seasonality and Crop Selection, Vegetable Propagation, Considerations for Small Fruit Production, Small Farm Safety, Post-Harvest Handling and Food Safety, Crop Plans, and Marketing. Classes are held from 7-9:30 p.m. on Monday evenings. A tour of local farms will be scheduled for one Saturday during the course (TBD). Your $75 registration fee includes a course manual, program materials, and light snacks.
