BEEKEEPING ESSAY CONTEST - The annual Beekeeping Essay Contest is an exciting opportunity for students to test their writing abilities and learn something new about Honey Bees and their importance in the environment. This competition is open to all Georgia 4-H members in the 4th-12th grades. State and national prizes are offered for this contest. For the state contest, a cash prize of $250 will be given for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for third place. The first place Georgia essay will then move on to the national competition and will be eligible for additional prizes and awards. This year’s essay topic is, “Immunity: Threats to Bee Colonies and Methods to Defend Against the Threats.” The deadline for submitting an essay is Wednesday, April 7, 2021, at 5:00 PM. Georgia winners will be announced by Wednesday, April 14, 2021. LEADERSHIP IN ACTION - LIA is a competition for 7th-12th grade 4-H'ers. Applications should reflect a 4-H’er’s work over the past year, from January 1 of the prior year through March 1 of the current year in which the application is due. The program focuses on the process of leadership engagement by the 4-H’er. Sumter County 4-H Leadership in Action Applications are due Friday, April 2, 2021. Turtle Trash Collectors: April 15, 2021 – 4:00 pm eastern daylight time (attached)
Join University of North Carolina – Wilmington staff as they virtually demonstrate a simulated sea turtle necropsy (animal dissection) and teach how trash can get to the ocean, how trash in the ocean can impact sea turtles, and how we can all help stop marine debris!

Join Environmental Specialist John Cassell as he teaches us ways devices like smart phones and tablets can contribute data and photographs to science projects. Phones are great tools that can be used in science … don’t put your phone down!

Alex Muscalus, a graduate student at Georgia Tech, will be teaching about erosion that happens along the coast and how nature can be part of the solution, such as marshes, oysters, and sand dunes.
