UGA Extension schedules three grape growers workshops

Editor's note: The Grape Spray Program Design Workshop for March 17, 2020 at Cartecay Vineyards in Ellijay GA has been canceled due to Coronavirus issues. We are sorry to announce this, but it is necessary in order to keep everyone as safe as possible. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is holding a series of workshops specifically for Georgia grape growers in March.

The classes, set for March 3 in Carrollton, Georgia; March 5 in Dahlonega, Georgia; and March 17 in Ellijay, Georgia, will cover disease and insect control and other critical components of an integrated pest management program for vineyards.

“Vineyard managers ask questions year-round relative to how to set up and administer an efficacious program for management of diseases and insects,” said Paula Burke, UGA Extension coordinator in Carroll County.

In these workshops, vineyard managers will learn the skills and confidence needed to develop effective spray programs incorporating resistance management, she said.

The workshops will include an overview of major pathogens and insects and critical times to manage them. Producers will work in small groups with UGA specialists to develop example grape-spray programs.

Each free, day-long session begins with registration at 9:30 a.m., concludes at 3 p.m. and includes lunch. A maximum of 20 participants will be accepted per location.

Growers hopeful 2024 peach season will rebound from disastrous 2023 04/10/24 Emily Cabrera
Last year, the peach industry lost $60 million due to the late freeze that hit much of the Southeast in mid-March 2023, said Jeff Cook, University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent for Peach and Taylor counties. With no freezing temperatures in the forecast and hope for strong pricing during the upcoming season, peach growers are looking forward to a much-needed rebound year.

Newest round of Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants awarded 03/05/24 Olivia Randall
Ten university-wide projects devoted to advancing interdisciplinary research across multiple application areas have been awarded Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grants as part of the 2023 cohort. The Presidential Interdisciplinary Seed Grant Program was launched in 2017 and offered again in 2019 and 2021 through a partnership between the offices of Research and Public Service and Outreach. These 10 awards were chosen from 70 proposals and reflect a commitment of $1 million from UGA President Jere W. Morehead.
