Upson County 4-H Events and Activities

National Plant a Flower Day

Monday March 12th is National Plant a Flower Day. Come to the County Extension Office between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. to plant a flower to take home. FREE event. Note: Thomaston-Upson schools are closed that day.

City of Thomaston’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt + Spring Fling & Chalk Walk

Saturday March 31st from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Greatest Generation Memorial Park

Sidewalk Chalk Art, Free Activities, Easter Bunny Entertainment, Bubbles, Food Vendors, Arts & Crafts, Kids/Teen Chalk Art Contest, and more!

Egg Hunt Times:
Special Needs - 11 a.m. (by the Playground)
3 & Under - 11:30 a.m. (by the Playground)
4 - 6 Year Olds - 11:40 a.m. (in the pine grove)
7 - 10 Year Olds - 11:50 a.m. (in the pine grove)

Upson County 4-H will have a tent near the Playground so make sure to stop by and say Hi!

Makerspace (STEAM Club)

Upson County 4-H Makerspace has limited vacancies for students in 1st - 5th grade. Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, build, and invent as they engage in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). Our Makerspace is open on Fridays from 3:30 to 5pm at the Upson County Extension Office. Registration Fee ($80 for 8 sessions) covers materials. Open enrollment - you can start anytime.
We are also looking for STEAM Volunteers (6th—12th grade or adults).

Poultry Judging Competition

Cheep! Cheep! Do you love chickens? Join our Poultry Judging Team! Poultry Judging practice will be held at the County Extension Office on March 27, 29, April 3, 5, 10, 12, 17, 19. The Poultry Competition will be in Henry County on May 4th.

Spring Break Activities

Planning is underway for 4-H Spring Break activities.  Events will be on the Upson County 4-H Facebook page and right here on our website. Check back soon for details!

Georgia 4-H Senior Conference

All current 9th-12th Grade 4-H members are invited to the Georgia 4-H Senior Conference on April 7-8 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.

The conference includes a semi-formal dance, an after-dance party with inflatable obstacles, motivational speakers, college recruiters, time to spend with friends and meet new ones, and much, much more!

Cost $75. If you are interested in attending call 706-647-8989 to register.

Mission Make-It: Georgia 4-H Engineering Challenge

Mission Make-It is on Saturday, April 14 at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.

Through the generous support of Lockheed Martin via National 4-H Council, Georgia 4-H is providing this exciting opportunity for students to engage in the engineering design process, teamwork, critical thinking, and positive youth development!

This event will include hands-on building opportunities, as well as an opportunity to showcase prior work in the area of STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). Cost $10. Call the Extension Office to register.

Homeschool Skate at Griffin Skate Inn

4-H Homeschool excursion to Griffin Skate Inn on Friday April 20th from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. We will meet at the County Extension Office at noon, have pizza for lunch and take the bus to Griffin. Cost: $10 includes pizza, transport and skate hire.

Junior Rally

All current 6th-8th grade 4-H members are invited to the Northeast/Northwest District Junior Rally on April 28-29 at Camp Wahsega 4-H Center.

We’ll have exciting things to do like your choice of ropes course obstacles, talent show, dancing, campfire, s’mores, other interesting classes, community service projects, time in the falls (weather permitting), the annual glow-in-the-dark night Easter Egg Hunt, plus plenty of time to hang out with all your friends from Northeast and Northwest Districts!

Gardening Club

We are hoping to get the Gardening Club up and running in the Spring. If you would like to join the Gardening Club, or would like to volunteer, please contact us.

Vidalia Onion Fundraiser

We hope you will participate in our Vidalia Onion Fundraiser! This fundraiser helps support our 4-H programs and promotes Georgia’s Official Vegetable and signature crop, the famous “Sweet Onion”.

$10.00 per 10 lb. bag   or   $7.00 per 5 lb. bag
Pickup date: after Thursday, May 10th

Call or come by the Extension (4-H) Office to place your order. Deadline to turn in orders to the 4-H Office is Monday April 23rd.

Best Better Magazine

Are you a writer, artist or photographer? Georgia 4-H wants your work for the pilot issue of Best Better Magazine, our new online literary magazine. Contact the Extension Office for more info. 

Submission Deadline is May 1st. Pilot issue to be published June 22nd.

Poetry: no haikus. Less than 1,000 words.
Short Stories: 100-3,000 words.
Essays: 2,000 words or less.
Photography: Cropped and edited if possible.
Art: Please include title and medium.

Mar 20 - Mar 21 Step Up and Lead @ Rock Eagle 4-H Center Eatonton, GA - (65.0 miles) Step Up and Lead is a youth leadership conference designed and facilitated by youth development professionals for 4th-8th grade students, featuring exciting, interactive workshops that promote leadership, public speaking, teamwork, and collaboration! Schools are encouraged to register and bring student government members, club officers, or other emerging youth leaders.
Mar 24 - Mar 25 SW District Project Achievement for 4th-6th Graders Bonaire, GA - (51.0 miles) 4-H Members in 4th-6th grades will compete for honors in their project area of interest. Youth sign up at their County Extension 4-H Office in early fall to develop his/her project and prepare for the competition. There are over 50 projects to choose from. Youth learn powerful research, writing and oral presentation skills. Youth may also choose to compete in a performing arts project (singing, dancing) or demonstrate culinary skills in a foods lab project.
