4-H Success at District Competition! Lanier County 4-H attended the Southwest District Junior/Senior 4-H Project Achievement contest on February 2-4, 2018, at Rock Eagle 4-H Center in Eatonton, Georgia. District Project Achievement (DPA) is a public speaking contest where youth give a 10-12 minute speech on their project area of choice. Each individual also submitted a portfolio that showcases yearlong work in their project area, leadership, community service, and other 4-H/community activities. This is an outstanding competition that comes with a lot of hard work and preparation. There were over 500 people at the event including 4-H’ers, volunteers, parents, and other Extension staff members. Lanier County had three 4-H’ers competing! Reagin Jones placed 1st in Junior Sports, Haley Stone placed 4th in Senior Pork Production, and Madison Hunt placed 1st in Senior Arts and Crafts. Madison will also advance to the state competition in July. Way to go! Two of the Lanier County Extension staff members also attended. Mrs. Rachel Hubbard, Family and Consumer Sciences Agent, served as a Food Lab Coordinator for 4-H’ers that prepared food dishes during their project. Ms. Megan Powell, 4-H Agent, serves as a District Board Advisor for 16 elected 4-H youth officers all year long. DPA is an event planned by those officers; the Board Advisors help to polish assembly scripts and organize the officers for the weekend. We are very proud of all three of the competitors from Lanier County! If you would like more information about 4-H or District Project Achievement, please contact the Lanier County Extension Office at (229) 482-3895.
